PREDICTIONS

There are no sensations after first day… What will happen tomorrow? My bet is five top teams will retain their positions, probably the order will be slightly reversed. Particularly DE BOTTON team is expected to be higher, as this is Janet’s birthday! Best wishes!

TO BID OR NOT TO BID? THIS IS NOT THE QUESTION!

Bridge is a bidders’ game… It is well known rule. But sometimes it works particularly effectively. Let’s look at the two boards of the round 5 of the teams tournament.

At the VAINIKONIS - ZAWADA match, four old friends, who played some years for the same team in Polish league have met:

West

North

East

Cichocki

Gierulski

1♥ overcall, even not vulnerable surely is not everyone’s choice. To bid it was easy, now it is time to make… North led ♠3 (Polis leads, low from dubleton). Cichocki ruffed and played a diamond - king, ruff. Spade ruffed in dummy and one more small diamond - ace ruffed. Now declarer crossed the dummy with ace of trumps and played one more diamond. South tried the best he could do - ruffed with the jack of trumps. Declarer overrufed and (knowing, that North has no more spades from the lead) played a trump, discarding low club. North - South could take only two trump tricks - made, 650 for ZAWADA. It gave 4 imps, as at the replay the contract was 4♠ doubled, down three.

A few minutes later, Cichocki got once again 4-count with the king-fifth:

This time the opponents were vulnerable, he was not. RHO opened once again 1♣ (Polish Club). Mirek overcalled 1♦, as usual, LHO has shown hearts, and the have found spade fit, obviously 4-4, and reached small slam…

He decided to lead a club (♣9, Polish leads again):

East played the queen and declarer took the trick with the ace. Now he tried ♥J, finessing. East has won with the king and played a diamond… Declarer played the ace and now there were many ways to make the contract, but each of them required trump finesse… But it was hard for Skrzypczak to imagine West’s overcall, who did not have the heart king, without the spade queen and played the trumps from the top… One down!

TEAMS TOURNAMENT - PLAY OFFS
